The training program

Well, my official training program begins on Monday. I just spent a few minutes putting all my training runs into iCal, and I discovered some interesting realities about my future over the next 16 weeks.

I will run:

5 miles on my anniversary...

9 miles on my birthday...

12 miles on the day I perform a wedding for a couple in our church...

16 miles on the Saturday of our church camping trip...

18 miles on the day of the GRADA Ultimate playoffs...

and so on.

Pretty crazy, huh? It is sinking in that this achievement is not merely about being able to run 26 miles in one race. It's also about being dedicated enough to the goal that I give up a lot of personal freedom for the sixteen weeks preceding the race. This will be good for me; perseverance and the surrender of autonomy are two areas of my character that probably need a bit of work. This program will sand off the rough corners, to say the least.

Here's a quick glance at the entire program (click to enlarge):

Now that's what I call a challenge.

Ha ha, right you are. Running a marathon is like the most climactic anticlimax I can think of. Training for a marathon is as much of an undertaking as is running one. It's such a cool thing that you and Tracey can plow through this together.

I remember my senior year at Roberts, I used to always miss our long distance day of practice because my internship happened to go late on the same day of the week every week. Once in awhile I'd get up early and run the miles for that day before going in to work. I remember sitting in a classroom and telling someone I'd run 6 miles before coming in that morning, and that person about falling out of his chair.

Wait till you run 16!

I just compared our training schedules. Overall, the schedule Bri and I are on is a bit more intense, but not much. Over the 16 weeks we end up running a total of 12 more miles, which is very minor considering how many miles total we're running over that time (418 and 430). Our long runs are identical on 3 weekends, and vary by 1-4 miles on other weekends. The biggest difference is actually the camping trip weekend, where you have the enjoyment of running 16 miles and we have an easy 12. :) (12 miles easy?! I must be on my way to being a marathoner!)
